Payne’s Place was named after the legendary Professional Golfer Payne Stewart.  He was a two time U.S. Open Champion along with 24 professional events.  Mike Hicks, Payne’s caddy of 12 years, who is a Mill Creek homeowner, had set up a “Skins” match for the Monday following the 1999 U.S. Open Tournament here at Mill Creek.  The players for the event were Payne Stewart, Freddie Couples, Hal Sutton, and Paul Azinger.  As it happened, Payne in dramatic fashion, won the 1999 U. S. Open with that memorable putt on the 72nd hole.  After the victory, Payne celebrated at Mike’s house awaiting the “Skins” match the following day.  Mill Creek Golf Club entertained approximately 6,000 spectators who followed the match.  On October 25th of that same year, Payne died in a tragic plane crash while headed to Dallas to do consulting work for a golf course design project.
